BICYCLE EDUCATION

White Oak Bicycle Cooperative is home to one of the largest bicycle safety education program in the State of Tennessee, educating thousands of children and youth across the Southeast Tennessee region each year.

WOBC’s Bicycle Safety Education Program is grant funded safety initiative in partnership with with the Tennessee Highway Safety Office

Program Goals

  1. Provide bicycle and pedestrian educational programming to children ages 6-16 in low- income populations, minority groups, and underserved populations in the Greater Chattanooga area of Tennessee.

  2. Partner with local area schools, nonprofits, and governmental organizations to provide programming and build a network of services for youth safety education.

Bicycle Education Programs

  • Bicycle Rodeos

Skills clinics to teach children safe bicycle handling and basic rules of the road, perfect for children under 12 years old. This type of program can be done almost anywhere, but empty parking lots or wide open spaces are best.

  • Earn-A-Bike

Safety education programing for schools in the Chattanooga Region where students earn a free refurbished bicycle by completing a bicycle safety education program.

  • Bicycle Skills and Guided Rides

A very shortened version of the rodeo, focusing on only a couple of skills at a time, with fewer students (limited to 10). After practicing skills, we go on a ride, typically on a greenway or safe bicycle infrastructure in town. This program is best for middle schoolers and high schoolers and we prefer to work with the students over a series of skills and rides for progressive skill building.

  • Pop-up Bicycle Playground

Basically a really fancy bicycle rodeo with our super cool equipment! It is best used for an event open to the public such as fairs, festivals, and Open Streets Events.

  • Learn to Ride Lessons

Coming soon! We teach children how to ride a bike without training wheels.

  • Health Fairs/Speeches/Presentations

These can be virtual or in-person and again, tailor-made to your audience. Typical examples of this type of programming include school health fairs and health department presentations/training.

All programs are tailor made to our partner’s needs, space, time, and attendance of participants. In most cases, we provide all the bikes, helmets, and other materials needed for a program– all our partner needs to do is show up with the children participating!
